Joint Commissioner Raises Alarm on GST Evasion, Recommends Rational Use of Manpower

Sriram Saroj, a Joint commissioner from the Azamgarh zone (UP), sent a letter on October 27, 2025 (Monday), to principal secretary of state tax M. Devraj regarding the increasing of tax evasion in the state.

He added that in many districts, less than two mobile teams are working properly, and each team has only one or two state tax officers. Because of this shortage, tax leaks are going unchecked.

He also suggested that every district should have at least three well-equipped mobile teams with trained officers to keep watch on goods transport at all times and stop any loss of revenue.

Sriram Saroj said that when only one team is working, enforcement work often stops completely if the officers are busy with other tasks or technical issues. He also pointed out that while there aren’t enough officers in enforcement, two officers are unnecessarily posted in the registration section. He called this a “waste of manpower” that could be better used for field work that helps bring in revenue.

The letter stated, “It is humbly requested that in districts with fewer than three operational enforcement teams, additional officers be deployed promptly so that field-level collection and monitoring can improve effectively.”

He requested urgent deployment of additional officers in smaller districts and a rational reorganisation of manpower to make strong enforcement and increase state revenue.
