Only 10 Days Left! Taxpayers, CAs, and Associations Urge Govt to Extend Due Date for Filing ITR and Tax Audit Reports
The Income Tax Return (ITR) filing due date is just around the corner; there are only 10 days left. Numerous taxpayers just want to know whether the government will extend the September 15 deadline of ITR (Income Tax Return) filing and also the September 30 deadline of TAR (Tax Audit Reports) filing.
The filing season is at its peak; there are several taxpayers, professionals, and businesses who are still due to fill their Income Tax Return (ITR); however, due to several reasons, they are facing problems in filing, such as delay in utilities and return form availability, glitches in the income tax portal, changed format of reporting for non-corporate entities, the time of the festival season, extension of the due date for non-audit cases, shortened time for audit work, overlap with other compliances, etc.
Keeping all these problems in mind, several chartered accountants (CAs), tax professionals, business authorities, and consultant tax associations have tried approaching the finance minister and CBDT via social media platforms and official representations, urging the authority to extend the due date for filing the Income Tax Returns (ITRs) and Tax Audit Reports (TARs). Here are a few of these approaches:
The Rajasthan Tax Consultant’s Association (RTCA), Jaipur, recently wrote an official representation dated September 01, 2025, addressing the Honourable Finance Minister Nirmala Sitaraman and the Hon’ble Chairman, Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), with a subject line, “Request for Extension of Date of Tax Audit Report by 15th November 2025—Request for Your Urgent Action Please.” In the representation, RTCA highlighted problems such as delay in release of utility/return form, portal glitches, revised format of reporting for non-corporate entities, festival season, and extension of due date of assessment for those who are not under audit. Therefore, the authority requested to extend the due date for filing Income Tax Returns (ITRs) and Tax Audit Reports (TARs) to November 15, 2025.
In the second situation, the Bombay Chartered Accountants’ Society (BCAS) wrote an official representation dated September 01, 2025, addressed to the Hon’ble Union Minister for Finance and Corporate Affairs, Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman, and Chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), Shri Ravi Agrawal, with a subject line, “Representation requesting extension of due dates for filing of Income Tax Returns and Audit Reports for AY 2025-26.” In the representation, BCAS emphasised problems faced by taxpayers in filing the Income Tax Returns and Audit Reports for AY 2025–26, including late release of ITR forms and utilities, shortened time for audit work, technical issues on the portal, overlap with other compliances, reduced working days this financial year, risk of errors and penalties, etc. Therefore, at the end of the representation, the authority was requested to extend the due date for filing income tax returns and audit reports.
A chartered accountant (CA) named Anupam Sharma wrote on the platform ‘X,’ addressing the Ministry of Finance and CBDT, New Delhi, that the devastating effects of heavy rains and floods have made the task of filing ITR difficult for taxpayers residing in affected states due to a lack of proper connectivity and the late availability of ITR forms. This is making them distressed. Therefore, the department requests to understand their struggles and extend the deadline for filing ITR to September 30, 2025, and for tax audit to November 30, 2025. It was a time when taxpayers needed support from the department.
He said, “With so many states facing the devastating effects of heavy rains and floods, a simple task like filing taxes has become nearly impossible for many. The lack of proper connectivity and the late ITR forms are only adding to the stress.”
