Calls Grow Louder for ITR Deadline Extension Amid Floods, Portal Glitches
In recent days, a boost has been noticed on social media platforms, especially on platform ‘X,’ with individuals urging the finance ministry and the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) to extend the due date for filing the Income Tax Return (ITR). The due date for ITR filing has already been extended once, from July 31, 2025, to September 15, 2025. However, taxpayers are still not ready for this date and have yet to file their returns. Previously, the deadline was extended amid glitches in the Income Tax Portal.
Many individuals on social media platforms have cited the devastating effects of heavy rains and floods in making requests to the finance ministry for an extension of the due date. In July 2025, many states in India suffered natural disasters. Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, Rajasthan, Delhi, Mumbai, and Chhattisgarh are some states that are mainly affected by this. States like Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand have even suffered floods, landslides, and even cloudbursts. River levels in Delhi and Jammu and Kashmir have significantly increased, which has caused human, economic, and environmental damage.

Besides, on peak days, technical glitches have been noticed in the income tax portal; the site has crashed and lagged several times. As evidence, a user at platform ‘X’ also shared a video showing glitches in the portal and hence requested the government extend the due date for ITR filing.

As of now, 5 crore taxpayers have successfully filed their Income Tax Return (ITR), according to the Income Tax agency. In the previous financial year, a total of 7.28 crore ITRs were filed as of the due date, i.e., July 31, 2024.
Due to technical problems and issues in many states, several institutions and trade groups have asked the government to extend the tax filing deadline. On Thursday, organisations like the Karnataka State Chartered Accountants Association (KSCAA), the Central Council of Chartered Accountants of India (CCCAI), the Advocates Tax Bar Association (ATBA), the Bombay Chartered Accountants’ Society (BCAS), the Chandigarh Chartered Accountants Taxation Association (CCATAX), and the Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) sent a request to Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman asking for more time.
So far, the government has not responded to these requests. As of now, the deadline to file Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for individuals is 15th September 2025. For those whose accounts need to be audited, the deadlines are 30th September 2025 for submitting the audit report and 31st October 2025 for filing the ITR. If you miss the deadline but file your ITR before December 2025, you will have to pay a penalty: Rs. 5,000 if your income is more than Rs. 5 lakh per year and Rs. 1,000 if your income is less than Rs. 5 lakh per year.
