The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has caught Superintendent, CGST Audit-I, Mumbai red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs. five lakh from the complainant.

On December 22, 2025, a director of a private company registered a complaint against the Superintendent, CGST. On November 26, 2025, an audit was carried out by the alleged officer on the company owned by the complainant. In the complaint registered, it was asserted that the company’s owner (complainant) was threatened by the officer to raise a tax demand amounting to Rs. 98 lakh against his company, and to settle down the issue, he demanded a bribe of Rs. 20 lakh.

After a thorough discussion, the Superintendent, CGST, agreed to accept Rs. 17 lakh; however, he put a condition that he would not remove the entire tax demand from the complainant’s company but instead reduce the alleged tax liability. When asked the source of the amount, the officer could not explain. They also recovered documents associated with the purchase of two properties, one worth Rs. 40.315 lakh bought in April 2025, and another worth Rs. 32.10 lakh bought in June 2024.

Searches were also carried out at the office of the accused, who is a public servant. During this search, digital evidences were also confiscated, showing that he was preparing an audit report for a private company. The investigation is still ongoing.
