Since PAN serves the purpose of a taxpayer’s user ID to get access to the official e-filing portal of the income tax department, it plays a crucial role in the filing of income tax returns.

If you did not register, then simply, you have to register on the website by entering your PAN details. But before that, it is essential to know if the PAN mentioned by you is a valid one or not. Another thing is that you can perform this check even if you are not registered on the website.

Verification of PAN’s Validity

Here’s how you can do it through the official site:

1. Check that the name, as well as the date of birth written on the PAN card, is accurate and visit the Income official website.

2. On the left-hand side column there appears a check tab called ‘Verify your PAN status’, click on it.

3. You will be taken to the page where you need to enter your PAN, full name, date of birth, and valid mobile number, same as mentioned on your PAN.

4. An OTP of six digits will sent to the mobile number you provided, Enter that OTP.

5. If your verification is successful, you will receive this message – PAN status is active, and details as per PAN.

Along with the verification of PAN validity, linking of PAN and Aadhaar is also important. Make sure that your PAN and Aadhaar are linked, if they are not, then the PAN will become inoperative.

Here’s how you can complete the linking process:

3. Please enter your PAN and/or Aadhaar number.

4. If the two are linked, then no action has to be made.

5. If they aren’t, then you will have to log in to the Income Tax E-filing Official Website.

6. Follow the link e-file > e-pay tax > New payment.

7. Select the payment type – ‘Other receipts (500)’ and go on.

8. You can observe that the default amount being pre-filled is Rs.1000; you will now select the continue tab.

9. Select your bank account and proceed with the payment.

10. To download the challan, you need to open e-File and then the option e-Pay Tax followed by the Payment History option should be selected.

11. After that, the click ‘Link Aadhaar’ tab present on the left-hand side of the home page of the income tax e-filing portal.

12. To do this enter your PAN and Aadhaar and then validate the information.

PAN holders who failed to link their Aadhaar with the PAN by June 30, 2023, then their PAN became inoperative from 01st July 2023 and the person has to make the PAN operative again within 30 days by seeding their Aadhaar and paying a penalty of 1000 rupees.

But those, who are not needed to perform this linking process, will escape the corresponding consequences.
