ITR Filing Deadline Nears: Check Step-by-Step Guide to File and Documents Needed
Presently, the due date for filing the Income Tax Return (ITR) is September 15, 2025. Taxpayers are now left with only three days to reach the ITR due date. Still, there are numerous taxpayers due to file their ITR; hence, there are chances that the government may further extend the due date for filing ITR beyond September 15, 2025.
Earlier, the deadline for ITR filing was extended for non-audit cases from July 31, 2025, to September 15, 2025, by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT). This financial year, ITR forms were made available late; for example, ITR-5, ITR-6, and ITR-7 were issued in August. Because of this, taxpayers were left with limited time to file their returns. Hence, it is anticipated that the government may extend the due date for ITR filing beyond September 15.
In the previous year, situations were different; ITR-1 to ITR-4 and ITR-6 were released in April, which was the perfect time for release. Taxpayers had adequate time to file their returns. Other than this, other forms were also released by June. Therefore, taxpayers had enough time.
