War, Weak Markets, and Cautious Investors: Why PhonePe Hit Pause on Its IPO
PhonePe has decided to delay its public market listing for now. CEO Sameer Nigam said this is because of global tensions and unstable markets. The company still plans to go public with a listing in India, but only when things become more stable.
Why did PhonePe delay the IPO?
The main reason is the ongoing conflict involving the US, Israel, and Iran, which has made global investors nervous. When there is uncertainty, like war, investors prefer to hold onto their money instead of investing. Because of this, raising large amounts of money becomes harder.
Impact of global investors
Many big investors in Indian startups come from the Middle East and global funds. Due to the conflict, these investors are being more cautious and conserving money, which affects IPO plans. The $1.3 billion IPO, valuing the company at $15 billion, requires more liquidity than the current market offers.
Not just PhonePe, but other startups may also delay their IPOs.
Market conditions are already weak
Another issue is that many tech companies that went public recently are not performing well. In fact, several IPOs from 2025 are trading below their original price, which makes new investors more careful.
PhonePe’s IPO importance
PhonePe’s IPO could have been one of the biggest in India, second only to Paytm’s IPO in 2021.
The company is very strong in the market; it has around a 45% share in UPI payments, while competitor Google Pay has about a 35% share. Apart from this, they handle 85% of the billions of transactions every month.
