ITR Refund Delayed Even After Processing? Here’s How to Get It Quickly!

Many times you file your income tax returns (ITRs) in a timely manner, and also the e-filing portal shows ‘processed’ status, but still the refund amount is not credited to bank accounts. In these cases, you do not need to worry about your refund amount because several times refunds get delayed even after it is processed, and there can be numerous reasons behind this.

Several times, refunds get delayed due to:

  • Incorrect bank details or IFSC code
  • An error in TDS or tax credits
  • The refund has been issued, but it may take 15 to 30 days to be credited to the bank account.

How can this problem be resolved?

Taxpayers can resolve this problem by simply following the steps below:

  1. Log in to your account at the Income Tax e-filing portal.
  2. On the homepage, navigate to the Refund/Demand Status section.
  3. Check your bank account number and IFSC code in case your ITR has been processed but the refund amount has not been credited to your bank account.
  4. If you have checked all the details and verified they are correct, but still a refund has been credited to your account, in that case, file a Refund Reissue Request.
  5. Once the ‘Refund Reissue Request’ is successfully submitted, thereafter soon your refund amount will be credited to your bank account.

How can NSDL help you in this case?

In case when the Refund File Dispatch (RFD) code is visible on the e-filing portal, however, your refund has been credited to your account, you can approach the National Securities Depository Limited (NSDL) or the bank of your bank. Because many times refunds get delayed due to technical glitches. Generally, the refund amount is credited to the bank accounts 15 to 30 days after processing is completed.

Usually, taxpayers who have income sources from salary, bank interest, or other common sources and who fall under the category of non-audit get their refunds faster in comparison to other taxpayers.

These taxpayers file their Income Tax Returns (ITRs) by filing details like income, deductions, and TDS details directly on the portal, which helps in processing their refunds faster.

This assessment year (2025-26), the due date for filing the Income tax Return (ITR) was lastly extended till September 16, 2025. This financial year, the government twice extended the deadline for ITR filing for non-audit cases, first from July 31, 2025, to September 15, 2025, and then the second time from September 15, to 16, 2025. However, the government did not make any changes to the due date for audit cases; it remained at October 31, 2025.
