ITR Deadline Today: What if You Fail to File ITR by Today’s Due Date?
The last date to file Income Tax Return (ITR) for Assessment Year 2025-26 is September 15, 2025, i.e., today. The income tax department has already confirmed this due date via a post shared on platform X.
Many taxpayers complained that they were not able to file their ITR as the income tax portal was down on Sunday for a short period. Many raised this issue, yet the income tax department has not extended the due date.
What if You Miss Today’s Due Date?
The ITR you file after the original due date is called a belated or late return. You can file a belated return until December 31, 2025. If you do not file ITR by September 15, it will attract a penalty and interest. A late filing fee under Section 234F of the Income Tax Act will be charged on the ITR filed after September 15, 2025. The penalty can be Rs 5,000 for income more than Rs 5 lakh and Rs 1,000 for income less than Rs 5 lakh.
Additionally, you will also be liable to pay interest on the unpaid tax amount under section 234A of the Act. The interest is 1% and is calculated from the return filing due date until the actual filing. Therefore, it is better if you file ITR today.
