Govt Works to Build a Safe and Accountable Online Gaming Ecosystem in India

The government is working to create a safe, responsible, and accountable online gaming ecosystem in the nation. To ensure the same, the government has made an objective of promoting innovation in e-sports and online social games and restricting online money games. In the context of this objective, the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025 (“Gaming Act”) has been enacted.

All types of online money gaming applications are strictly restricted under the Gaming Act. Additionally, promotion, advertisement, and facilitation of such games are also not allowed under the said Act. The list of prohibitions also includes the processing of related financial transactions through banks or payment systems.

Other than these, the provisions of the Information Technology Act, 2000, permit concerned authorities to block access to the unlawful platforms. In case someone is caught performing restricted activities mentioned under the Act, they suffer rigorous penalties for contraventions. Additionally, a person can suffer imprisonment of up to three years or a fine of up to one crore rupees, or both, if found to be involved in offering online money games or facilitating financial transactions for these types of online money games. The imprisonment years and the minimum fine can be further extended up to 3 years and up to two crore rupees, respectively.
