IT Department will contact 1.52 crore persons to file Income Tax Returns; Know the Reason Why?
The Income Tax Department will launch an enforcement operation against the people and businesses that are obligated to file income tax returns (ITRs) but have not yet done so.
According to the report, the IT department has discovered 1.52 crore such persons who have income or have had TDS deducted but have not filed their tax returns.
Field formations have been requested by the CBDT (Central Board of Direct Taxes) to get in touch with these defaulters as of April 15, the report further states.
An Official stated that 7.4 crore returns were filed for the financial year 2022–2023 as compared to the number of 8.9 crore taxpayers.
“Revised or updated tax returns also included in the numbers of returns filed,” further explained by the official.
Consequently, it is possible that those remaining 1.97 crore taxpayers did not file their ITR even if they had deducted TDS.
1.93 crore of the people who didn’t submit their returns fell into the individual category, 28,000 fell into the Hindu undivided family category, and 1.21 lakh fell into the firm category. The other people were classified into various other categories.
The field officials have been requested by CBDT to get in touch with these persons and provide accurate information and clarity on why it is necessary to file ITR.
If they are determined to be intentional defaulters, they will be penalized. However, taxpayers who can legally explain their unexpected income may need to submit a return or provide an explanation.
