ITR Processing Status: Timeline for Processing ITR in India; How Long it takes?

Filing an Income Tax Return (ITR) is an important process for Taxpayers. After submitting an ITR, how long it takes for the Income Tax Department to process it? Let’s understand it.

Once you submit your ITR online, you’ll receive a response of confirmation from the Income Tax Department stating that your return has been successfully submitted. You will receive an email and a text message with a number known as an acknowledgement number, which you should keep for future reference.

ITR Processing Time

It takes around 15 to 45 days for your ITR to get verified and checked from the date of e-verification. But this can also vary. In many cases, the given time of verification increases, mainly if the department needs to look into any difference closely or any additional information from you.

You are required to visit the e-filing portal of the Income Tax Department so that you can know your ITR processing status first.

Steps of Processing

1. Return Submitted: This process means that your return has been successfully received.

2. E-verification Done: It means that all your documents are verified without any issues.

3. Under Processing: It means that your return is currently being checked by the department.

4. Processed: It means your return has been processed. If you have any refund that will be issued soon.

By understanding these steps, you can have a clearer picture of what happens after you file your ITR and how long it might take for the process to be completed.

Sometimes department takes time in the processing of ITR due to a large number of returns, errors in the files and other reasons. You need to be patient and keep checking the status of your ITR regularly. If there is any important delay or issue, the department will inform you or give you notice to provide additional information.
