Mutual Fund SIPs Investors got Returns up to 60% in 2024
The end of the year leads to the checking of lots of mutual fund investors on how it went in their investments. The SIP (Systematic Investment Plan) investments showed some great results for 2024 for many schemes in the equity mutual funds category. Most schemes gave very good returns, with some offering more than 50%. However, one scheme ended the year with a small negative return.
The returns from equity mutual funds through SIPs in 2024 ranged between 60% and -1%. Out of the 268 equity mutual funds studied, more than 150 schemes have offered an XIRR (Extended Internal Rate of Return) of over 20% for SIP investments that began on January 1, 2024.
The top scorer was Motilal Oswal Mutual Fund. Out of its schemes, Motilal Oswal Midcap Fund and Motilal Oswal Small Cap Fund scored outstanding XIRRs of 60.08% and 54.72%, respectively. Other notable schemes were Motilal Oswal ELSS Tax Saver Fund and Motilal Oswal Large and Midcap Fund, scoring 49.23% and 48.72%, respectively.
Other top-performing funds included Bandhan Small Cap Fund, which gave a return of 46.44%, and Motilal Oswal Flexi Cap Fund, which provided 45.99%. Invesco Mutual Fund also did well, with its midcap fund giving 45.06%, its small-cap fund offering 42.29%, and its focused fund returning 40.88%.
Some schemes from HSBC Mutual Fund are HSBC Midcap Fund, Tax Saver Equity Fund, and Large and Mid Cap Fund that delivered XIRRs ranging between 38.48% and 38.70%. Kotak Emerging Equity Fund, another popular midcap scheme, returned an XIRR of 35.41%. Nippon India Growth Fund also offered 30%.
Nippon India Small Cap Fund and Canara Rob Small Cap Fund, two small-cap funds, recorded XIRRs of 27.08% and 27.01%, respectively. In the same timeframe, large mid-cap and flexi-cap funds HDFC Mid-Cap Opportunities Fund and DSP Flexi Cap Fund showed returns in the 22% to 25% range.
Funds with Humble Returns
Some schemes produced relatively low returns, like the SBI BlueChip Fund with a 15.53% XIRR. From ELSS funds, the Axis ELSS Tax Saver Fund delivered 19.07% XIRR, and the SBI Long Term Equity Fund brought 20.91%.
Out of 14 equity mutual funds, one returned below 10% XIRR for 2024. That’s the performance of the one fund with negative returns. One fund, ELSS Tax Saver, gave an XIRR of -0.98%, and investors saw their capital deplete. A Rs.10,000 SIP each month would now have an Rs.1.19 lakh.
Key Insight
Data analysis revealed that 33 equity mutual funds increased SIP investments by about 1.15 times in the year 2024. It has taken into account regular and growth options across the equity categories and excluded sectoral and thematic funds.
