ITR Due Date Extended? Has Govt Extended ITR Filing Deadline

The due date of filing the Income Tax Return (ITR) is scheduled for September 15, 2025, for non-audit cases. As the due date comes near, many tax professionals and taxpayers are submitting their representations to the government to request the extension of the ITR filing due date. The current question on everyone’s mind is whether the government will extend the ITR filing due date.

Many tax experts and CAs are pointing out the current ongoing issues on the income tax portal, which are causing delays in ITR processing and issues with ITR refund status. All these issues are majorly affecting the timely and accurate compliance. Therefore, taxpayers are requesting to allow more time to file ITR.

The original ITR filing due date for non-audit cases was July 31, 2025. However, this was extended to September 15, 2025, giving around 45 days extra to the taxpayers. This due date was extended due to the delay in the release of updated ITR forms and utilities. Now, since the due date again approaches, taxpayers are hoping for an extension again.

However, as of now, the government has not issued any official communication regarding the extension of the ITR filing due date. Therefore, experts suggest not waiting for the extension and filing ITR early. If you fail to file your ITR within this due date, you will be liable to pay interest and a late filing fee. It will also affect the income tax refund. So, it’s better to file your ITR now to avoid any legal trouble.
